ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL
St. Michael is one of the four angels mentioned by name in the Bible and he also appears in Hebrew scripture and in the Quran. His name means “Who is like God”. He is the chief of angels, leader of the armies of God against Satan. As such he is usually depicted wearing armor, including a helmet, and carrying a sword which he wields against the devil who is often shown in the form of a horned dragon.
Because Michael is also charged with “weighing” the souls of the departed and carrying them to Heaven, he is usually also shown with scales in one hand. He is considered the Patron Saint of the military—paratroopers, mariners and medics among others; of the police; and of chivalry.
Kyiv, Ukraine, is one of the cities which recognize him as their patron and defender.
In the Anglican communion we celebrate St. Michael, the Archangel, on the Sunday closest to September 29.
A Collect for Michael and All Angels
Everlasting God, who has ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
